Who Needs Christmas week three message from Pastor Chris Russell on December 24, 2017 at Community Church of Waterford, Goshen, Indiana. What amazes me about Christmas is how much attention it receives from everyone. While other holidays like Easter, Fourth of July, and Thanksgiving are significant to us, we only give them one day. But Christmas really gets focused on for about a month. During the Christmas season, billions of people set aside their normal routines to decorate their homes, send out cards, buy gifts, go to parties, attend church services, sing Christmas songs, watch Christmas TV specials and Christmas movies, and many even travel long distances to be with their families. Unfortunately, with all of these activities, it gets difficult to figure out how to get them all in during the month and that leads to a lot of stress in our lives that ends up taking away from the purpose of Christmas. We go in to the season with high expectations of a wonderful time of the year and often end up finding it becomes so difficult instead. What should be simple gets very, very complicated. Luke 2:8-14 John 3:16 John 17:3 John 3:17 The Story of Christmas is so much more than what we see at first glance… *not just some sweet little nativity scene – God’s story *not just a baby – savior of the world *not just Mary & Joseph’s son – Son of God *not just hope for a select few – hope for all who believe *not just a better life – eternal life (relationship) The Christ child is the most amazing gift of all time. So what do we do with such an amazing gift? 2 things: 1) Receive it – thankfulness/humility/truth/perspective 2) Pass it on – God loved, so he gave; Jesus loved, so he gave; we love – so we give You and I need Christmas, God needed Christmas, and the world needed (and continues to need) Christmas. We can’t keep all of this good news to ourselves. We have a responsibility to share it with everyone around us. Luke 2:15-20 Isaiah 6:8 Over 2,000 years ago, in the midst of a dark world full of brokenness and hopelessness, hope burned brightly in a manger in Bethlehem... the hope of the Christ child had arrived. He brought the hope and the light in to the world, and He entrust us to pass it on. Let’s commit ourselves this morning to passing on this message of hope by using what God has given each of us. Let us take what He has planted in our hearts and share it so that the whole world will know that there is a God who is passionately in love with them and wants to spend eternity with them.

Who Needs Christmas week two message from Pastor Chris Russell on December 17, 2017 at Community Church of Waterford, Goshen, Indiana. All of those Old Testament stories that many people see as being irrelevant today were actually the stories that birthed the promise of God. They were in essence the cocoon that birthed the hope of the world. Over thousands of years people had lost sight of the promise but during that entire period of time God was behind the scenes working… getting the world ready for the thing He ultimately had decided to do after sin had entered in to the world. The WORLD needed Christmas. But as it turns out it wasn’t just the world that needed Christmas, but God needed Christmas as well. God wanted to do something amazing so He needed to do something very relational and He needed Christmas to make that happen… and because it was going to be something so powerful, so life-altering, so eternity changing… it required God to show up in person. God was going to show up in an up close and personal type of way so that people could get close to Him and realize just how much He loved them, just how much He cared, and just how much He had an amazing plan for their lives and for their eternities, allowing them to completely put their trust in Him for good. Romans 5:6-8 You cannot demonstrate great love without sacrifice God needed Christmas. He needed Christmas to demonstrate his great love and document it for us, otherwise how would we have ever known? Matthew 1:20-23 John 1:12 Romans 8:15-17 Galatians 4:4-5 You can change your status with God TODAY… you can be adopted in to the family of God TODAY… your eternity can be changed TODAY. And the reason you can do this is because of the story of Christmas. God had to show the world that He was with us so that we could know that he was for us. The world needed a demonstration so God needed Christmas to do it.

Who Needs Christmas week one message from Pastor Chris Russell on December 10, 2017 at Community Church of Waterford, Goshen, Indiana. I don’t know how things are for you as we hit the final two week stretch to Christmas but I know for us we are always wrestling with keeping the right things in focus at this time of the year. We are surrounded by a culture that has a “I want, I want, I want… I must have, I must have, I must have” mentality. What is everybody asking each other right now as they are busy shopping and planning for Christmas? …. “What do you WANT for Christmas.” It’s all about the wants. But thank goodness God is about a much bigger purpose and plan than simply meeting our wants. When He put together the whole story of Christmas His primary goal was not about meeting our wants, it was about taking care of our biggest NEED. It’s not that God isn’t concerned with some of our wants, He often provides those to us, but His biggest focus at Christmas is something much, much more important than our simple wants. Genesis 12:1-3 Malachi 1:11 Galatians 4:4-5 Luke 1:28 Luke 1:31-33 So who needs Christmas? The answer to that question is actually quite simple…. God decided that the WORLD needed Christmas and He would work out the story of Christmas on the world’s stage involving some of the most significant people ever known in history.
