We Do

by Chris Russell
Who Needs Christmas week three message from Pastor Chris Russell on December 24, 2017 at Community Church of Waterford, Goshen, Indiana. What amazes me about Christmas is how much attention it receives from everyone. While other holidays like Easter, Fourth of July, and Thanksgiving are significant to us, we only give them one day. But Christmas really gets focused on for about a month. During the Christmas season, billions of people set aside their normal routines to decorate their homes, send out cards, buy gifts, go to parties, attend church services, sing Christmas songs, watch Christmas TV specials and Christmas movies, and many even travel long distances to be with their families. Unfortunately, with all of these activities, it gets difficult to figure out how to get them all in during the month and that leads to a lot of stress in our lives that ends up taking away from the purpose of Christmas. We go in to the season with high expectations of a wonderful time of the year and often end up finding it becomes so difficult instead. What should be simple gets very, very complicated. Luke 2:8-14 John 3:16 John 17:3 John 3:17 The Story of Christmas is so much more than what we see at first glance… *not just some sweet little nativity scene – God’s story *not just a baby – savior of the world *not just Mary & Joseph’s son – Son of God *not just hope for a select few – hope for all who believe *not just a better life – eternal life (relationship) The Christ child is the most amazing gift of all time. So what do we do with such an amazing gift? 2 things: 1) Receive it – thankfulness/humility/truth/perspective 2) Pass it on – God loved, so he gave; Jesus loved, so he gave; we love – so we give You and I need Christmas, God needed Christmas, and the world needed (and continues to need) Christmas. We can’t keep all of this good news to ourselves. We have a responsibility to share it with everyone around us. Luke 2:15-20 Isaiah 6:8 Over 2,000 years ago, in the midst of a dark world full of brokenness and hopelessness, hope burned brightly in a manger in Bethlehem... the hope of the Christ child had arrived. He brought the hope and the light in to the world, and He entrust us to pass it on. Let’s commit ourselves this morning to passing on this message of hope by using what God has given each of us. Let us take what He has planted in our hearts and share it so that the whole world will know that there is a God who is passionately in love with them and wants to spend eternity with them.
