Used week seven message from Pastor Chris Russell on November 4, 2018 at Community Church of Waterford, Goshen, Indiana. Thousands and thousands of people have gone before us in this race and many of their stories are captured in the Bible. Throughout the Bible we read stories of how God used imperfect, messed up, broken people and helped them to run the race of life with courage, hope, perseverance and purpose. Hebrews 12:1 In order to live by faith, you must often stop playing it safe When he was around 40 years old, Moses was walking about and seeing how his people the Hebrews were being treated. He saw an Egyptian foreman beating a Hebrew slave and it infuriated him. Looking around to make sure no one saw him, he killed the Egyptian and tried to hide his body. He had hoped that the Hebrews would see him as being used by God to rescue them, but they did not. And on top of that others did witness the killing and when he learned that the pharaoh was searching for him to kill him he ended up fleeing Egypt and running for his life. Moses then spent the next 40 years in the land of Midian as a foreigner. He got married and had two children and was a shepherd by trade. His lifestyle was certainly different in Midian than it had been in Egypt but it had become nice and safe, with nothing to push him out of his comfort zone. Then something quite unusual happened. One day while out taking care of his flock of sheep he saw a bush that was on fire but it was not burning up. He looked at it for a while and then had a profound response… “Huh! Will you look at that?” Ok, that might have been my response in that situation. All we are told is that Moses got closer to get a better look. It turns out that it’s the angel of the Lord appearing in the flame in the burning bush. Exodus 3:4 But there was something about that encounter, that calling of his name by God that had Moses’ full attention. It goes on to say this… Exodus 3:5-8,10 Playing it safe can have a lot of dangerous consequences. Safe will keep you… …trapped in the past. Isaiah 43:18-19 Playing it safe will keep you trapped in the past. Playing it safe will also keep you… … satisfied with today. Safe will keep us trapped in the past, it will keep us satisfied with today, and it will keep us… …afraid of tomorrow. Exodus 4:13 Safe is a place that will keep us from stepping out to where God wants us to be. If Jesus is calling you to do something that is going to require you to get out of your safe boat, to get out of your comfort zone, then know that He is already there waiting for you. You don’t have to say “Jesus come with me”, He’s already there… waiting for you to take a step out to where God wants you to be. You need to be reminded that Jesus is already there, waiting for you to step out in faith and join Him in what He is doing in the world around you, waiting for you to join Him in His ultimate purpose of changing the world and drawing people to Himself and to eternity with our Heavenly Father. Are you ready to take that step?
