My Big Fat Mouth week one message from Pastor Chris Russell on February 11, 2018 at Community Church of Waterford, Goshen, Indiana. Throughout this series we are going to be talking about the power of words. Our words have the power to give life and they have the power to take life. Jesus tells us that we speak from the overflow of our hearts. So everything that comes out reflects something that is going on at a deeper level inside of us. And sometimes we just do a horrible job of reflecting the faith we profess to have and the savior we claim to represent. Have any of YOU ever gotten in trouble because of your Big Fat Mouth? Now, complaining is nothing new is it? It is something that Christians and non-Christians all do far too often. God's people have been complaining since they were created. In the Old Testament, which is that part of the Bible that tells us about our history from Creation until before Jesus comes to earth, we read about the people of God and their interactions with God and with others. Many of you may know or are at least somewhat familiar with what God did at this time in history. The pharaoh refused to let the people go so God performed a series of miracles to get his attention. But, not long after God did something great they would begin to forget and the whining and complaining would kick into gear again. Exodus 14:11-12 Exodus 16:3 Exodus 16:8b What is it that you complain about the most? There are so many things that we complain about, both big and small. But there is something at the very core of complaining that we need to deal with. Because at it's very heart, complaining isn't about the weather, it's not about the traffic, it's not even about other people. The problem ultimately is that we've taken our eyes off of the goodness of God and we've placed them instead on ourselves. That is the problem that is at the heart of our complaining. Philippians 2:14-15 If you can't change your circumstances, then change your perspective. Philippians 2:17-18 Philippians 1:12-14 You can complain, you can gripe, you can whine all day long, and you may be justified. I know right now for many of you, there are some things going on that are just not pleasant. Or, you can change the way you look at it, and say, "I can't do anything about this, but I can choose to look for God in it. I can choose the way I speak about it. I can choose how I represent it. I can believe that this is the worst thing ever, or I can look for some sign that God's going to use me in it. EVEN IF. Even if my greatest prayer is never ever answered. Even if I never get out of this situation that I wish I was not in, I will still praise my God because he is good. He never leaves me. His presence is with me. His power is in me. Therefore I will praise him with everything that I have.
