Rich at What Matters Most week one message from Pastor Chris Russell on November 19, 2017 at Community Church of Waterford, Goshen, Indiana. How many of you when you were a kid hoped that you’d be rich when you grew up? So how many of you would say your filthy, mega-rich? So where’s the line to being rich? You never get paid on the 15th of the month and go, "Oh, I just crossed the line. I mean, yesterday, I wasn't rich. And today, woo-hoo, I'm rich. I finally got there." And if you do cross an imaginary line, once you get to the other side, you kind of think, "Well, the rich line just moved again. I thought it was here but suddenly it feel like it's way up there now." So what I want to do, over the next few weeks, is help many of you see that you’ve already crossed the line. I want you to realize and be able to say “I'm actually already rich and since God has blessed me with more than I need, I want to be rich in what matters most. I want to be rich in a way that honors God." 1 Timothy 6:17-19 Ecclesiastes 5:19 If you make $33,000 or more you are in the top 1 percent of wage earners in this world. You're a 1-percenter. You are in the top 1 percent of people alive on earth today; that's how rich you are. That's perspective when you don't just compare to rich people in our country, but rich people all over the world. You are one of them. Some of you, you didn't realize this but you are mega ,mega rich. If you earn $80,000 a year or more, you are in the top point 1 percent of wage earners in the world. In other words, you're in the top 1/10th of 1 percent. That's how crazy rich you are. 1/10th of 1 percent of everybody alive today; you are rich. The challenge is many of you still don't believe it, and some of you are even embarrassed to say that; which is interesting. But I want you to start paying closer attention to your day-to-day life and all of the rich people luxuries you get to enjoy that just aren’t a reality for 99% of the rest of the world. The good news is you're rich. The bad news is you're rich. Luke 18:24-25 Challenges of Being Rich 1. Harder for us to depend on God 2. Distracts us from true priorities 3. We have a greater responsibility We are rich. God has blessed us with more than we need. So God says, "Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant," because every blessing we don't turn back to praise has the potential to turn into pride. Command them to be generous in good deeds, and willing to share. And when they do, they will lay up for themselves treasures in heaven and experience the life that is truly life. We are going to be good at being rich because God has blessed us with more than we need, and we will be rich in what matters most.
