David - How Big is Your God?

by Chris Russell

Used week nine message from Pastor Chris Russell on November 18, 2018 at Community Church of Waterford, Goshen, Indiana. When you read through the Bible it doesn’t take very long to see that it is filled with broken, imperfect, messed up, common people. In their stories of uncertainty, fear, anger, joy, sorrow and weakness we discover our own stories. Just like us today, these people were individuals that God was crazy in love with. In their imperfection they decided to follow after God’s plan and purpose for their lives rather than choosing their own plan and purpose. And it is in the stories of their obedience, and sometimes disobedience, that we learn from their example and apply it to our own faith journeys today. Today we are looking at the life of David. He trusted God when it made absolutely no sense to do so and He expected God to show up in amazing ways that most people simply don’t expect anymore. And I believe that David’s words to me and his words to you would simply be this… You need a bigger God Christian Scholar A.W. Tozer had these words to say about the importance of our understanding of God… “Christianity at any given time is strong or weak depending upon her concept of God… the basic trouble with the church today is her unworthy concept of God.” 1 Samuel 16:6-7 Theologian Carl Henry (on the next generation of leaders): “Many of them are probably still non-believers. The next Billy Graham might be passed out drunk in a fraternity house at the moment and the next Mother Teresa might be managing an abortion clinic today.” 1 Samuel 17:11 1 Samuel 17:26 1 Samuel 17:45-47 Earlier we saw how terrified Saul and the rest of the Israelites were. And this is why… when your God is too small, you end up being fearful, and you end up being consumed by the “What if?” questions. *What if Goliath wins? *What if we have to serve them for the rest of our lives? *What if I can’t find a job? *What if it’s cancer? *What if I spend the rest of my life alone? What if, what if, what if… and when your God is too small, “what if” dominates your life. All you can see is the “what if” of the situation. David doesn’t see the “what if” of the situation, he sees the “who is” of the situation. From David’s perspective, this isn’t David vs. Goliath, this is God vs. Goliath. How big is your God? Kyle Idleman - “If you’re God’s job description is to make your life more comfortable and convenient, then you need a bigger God… if your God doesn’t call you to risk but tells you to play it safe, then you need a bigger God … if your God is a genie that is just here to grant your wishes, then you need a bigger God … if your God is a white guy who loves Americans more than He loves anyone else, then you need a bigger God... if your God is saying “come” but never saying “go” , then you need a bigger God … if your God never wrecks your schedule or messes up your plans, then you need a bigger God … if your God needs a particular person to be President of this nation to accomplish His purposes, then you need a bigger God … if your God has never filled your eyes with tears because of His grace or taken away your breath because of His power, then you need a bigger God … if your God’s dream for you is to retire and have a couple decades of just taking it easy, then you need a bigger God … if your God is just fine with just spending an hour a week with you on a Sunday morning service, then you need a bigger God … if your God says “You’ve worked hard enough on your marriage, I just want you to go and be happy now” , then you need a bigger God … if your God says that you are too old, or too young, or too broken, or too poor, or too late, or too guilty , then you need a bigger God …”
