Rich at What Matters Most week three message from Pastor Chris Russell on December 3, 2017 at Community Church of Waterford, Goshen, Indiana. Why did God make us rich? 2 Corinthians 9:11 1 Timothy 6:18 God-honoring rich people give: 1. Strategically 2 Corinthians 9:7 Malachi 3:10a God-honoring rich people give… 1. Strategically -Tithing teaches me to put God first Deuteronomy 14:23b -Tithing increases my faith in God Malachi 3:10b God-honoring rich people give: 1. Strategically -Tithing teaches me to put God first -Tithing increases my faith in God 2. Sacrificially & Extravagantly Luke 21:1-3 People who desire to be God-honoring with their riches give strategically and they give sacrificially and extravagantly. Don’t be a below-average giver. Take God at His word that He will bless you when you put him first. Do what’s necessary to adjust your lifestyle to put yourself in a position to be obedient to God’s instructions on how to use your finances. Put yourself in the position that when you see opportunities come up that require additional giving above your 10% that you can step up to the plate and give with a joyful and grateful heart. Choose to be really, really good at being rich.

Rich at What Matters Most week two message from Pastor Chris Russell on November 26, 2017 at Community Church of Waterford, Goshen, Indiana. Challenges of Being Rich: 1. Harder for us to depend on God 2. Distracts us from true priorities 3. We have a greater responsibility Jesus told many parables, or stories, that illustrated a truth about God and what it meant to live for God. On one occasion he told the people about a farmer who went out to sow some seed. Some of the seed flourished but most of it failed to produce a crop because it was choked out by thorns or eaten by the birds. Matthew 13:22 So I want to build on this idea of the deceitfulness of wealth. The reality is the world wants you to serve money. It wants you to serve money instead of God. Jesus knew the powerful pull that serving money had on the people He was talking to in His time here on Earth and for us today. Matthew 6:24 Money promises what only God can provide: Happiness Security 1 Timothy 6:17-19 People who love and trust money: Never Have Enough Find it increasingly difficult to give big Ecclesiastes 5:10 Proverbs 18:11 If we love and trust money, we never had enough…. and we find it increasingly difficult to give big… the third challenge we have is rich people might… Have money in the bank but no peace in their hearts Proverbs 15:16 More money is not going to keep your kids off drugs. More money is not going to make your marriage better. If you don't love each other when you have no money, you're going to fight about money when you do have it. More money is not going to cure the person you love of cancer. More Jesus is what you need. More Jesus brings intimacy, it brings healing, it brings focus, it brings power, it brings a purpose, it brings the divine into this world. What we need is more Jesus. So stop saying, "I want more money," because you're never going to have enough. What we should be saying is "I want more Jesus. I want more Christ. I want more of his purpose. I want more of his direction. I want more of his peace. I want more of his comfort… I want less of me and more of him. And I don't want to be distracted by the things that do not last. At whatever level you are, whatever "giving big" means to you, give big wherever you are. Give big somewhere… give like rich people give. Be generous, not later, but be generous now. And don't walk around with money in the bank, or stuff in your closet, but have no peace in your heart. Give your heart and finances to Jesus today and know that Jesus is the real peace that you need.

Rich at What Matters Most week one message from Pastor Chris Russell on November 19, 2017 at Community Church of Waterford, Goshen, Indiana. How many of you when you were a kid hoped that you’d be rich when you grew up? So how many of you would say your filthy, mega-rich? So where’s the line to being rich? You never get paid on the 15th of the month and go, "Oh, I just crossed the line. I mean, yesterday, I wasn't rich. And today, woo-hoo, I'm rich. I finally got there." And if you do cross an imaginary line, once you get to the other side, you kind of think, "Well, the rich line just moved again. I thought it was here but suddenly it feel like it's way up there now." So what I want to do, over the next few weeks, is help many of you see that you’ve already crossed the line. I want you to realize and be able to say “I'm actually already rich and since God has blessed me with more than I need, I want to be rich in what matters most. I want to be rich in a way that honors God." 1 Timothy 6:17-19 Ecclesiastes 5:19 If you make $33,000 or more you are in the top 1 percent of wage earners in this world. You're a 1-percenter. You are in the top 1 percent of people alive on earth today; that's how rich you are. That's perspective when you don't just compare to rich people in our country, but rich people all over the world. You are one of them. Some of you, you didn't realize this but you are mega ,mega rich. If you earn $80,000 a year or more, you are in the top point 1 percent of wage earners in the world. In other words, you're in the top 1/10th of 1 percent. That's how crazy rich you are. 1/10th of 1 percent of everybody alive today; you are rich. The challenge is many of you still don't believe it, and some of you are even embarrassed to say that; which is interesting. But I want you to start paying closer attention to your day-to-day life and all of the rich people luxuries you get to enjoy that just aren’t a reality for 99% of the rest of the world. The good news is you're rich. The bad news is you're rich. Luke 18:24-25 Challenges of Being Rich 1. Harder for us to depend on God 2. Distracts us from true priorities 3. We have a greater responsibility We are rich. God has blessed us with more than we need. So God says, "Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant," because every blessing we don't turn back to praise has the potential to turn into pride. Command them to be generous in good deeds, and willing to share. And when they do, they will lay up for themselves treasures in heaven and experience the life that is truly life. We are going to be good at being rich because God has blessed us with more than we need, and we will be rich in what matters most.
