Mistakes

by Chris Russell
Grace is Greater week one message from Pastor Chris Russell on March 11, 2018 at Community Church of Waterford, Goshen, Indiana. Did you know that every year new words are added to our dictionary? Because of such things as advances in technology, medicine, politics, sports and popculture , new words are needed to describe new things or new concepts. Last year, the Miriam Webster Dictionary alone added 30 new words that have become so regulary used in our day-to-day dealing with one another that they were officially recognized as their own words. These new words added included “binge-watching”, “photobomb”, “safe space”, “side-eye”, “weak sauce”, and even the expression “yowsa.” Different dictionaries have added different words through the years as they see them being relevant and used frequently. Here are a few that have made it through the years, see if you can figure out what they probably mean before I give you their definitions… Blamestorming - Sitting in a group and discussing who is responsible for the company’s problems instead of trying to solve them Intaxication - The euphoria of getting a tax refund, which lasts until you realize it was your money to begin with Phonesia - Act of dialing a phone number and forgetting whom you were calling just as they answer Disconfect - The attempt to sterilize the piece of candy you dropped on the floor by blowing on it On the flip side of new words is how we tend to not pay very close attention to words that have been around for a long, long time. The reality is when it comes to familiar words with familiar meanings we tend to overlook them, we don’t pay attention to them, we just assume we understand them. In this series, let’s approach one particular word like we’ve never heard it before – Set aside what you have thought about it and hear it for the first time with new ears… because while it is a word that we are fairly familiar with, and use from time to time, we miss the POWER of it all the time. So my hope is that after this 5 week series we all have a much deeper understanding of it then we have right now. That one word we are going to redefine for all of us is GRACE. Hebrews 12:15 Romans 3:23 Romans 6:23 Romans 5:12 Romans 5:15 Romans 5:16-18 Religion: Our attempt to earn God’s favor by following certain rules and regulations Religion Grace Keyword: Do Done Focus: Outward Inward Foundation: Rules Relationships Motivation: Shame Gratitude Feeling: Fear/Frustration Freedom Outcome: Pride/Guilt Love Grace is GREATER than religion! “Grace can be dissected like a frog, but the thing dies in the process.” Story from John 8 Two things Jesus teaches us in this story… 1. Grace is greater than your secret. 2. Grace is greater than your shame Jesus wants the broken rose, and there’s a word for that, and it’s GRACE.
